It Sucked and Then I Cried

I used to want children. In fact, there was a time when I wanted to have five. Five bouncing little bundles of joy and I wanted to deliver them all naturally after listening to my mother tell me what an incredible joy child bearing is for the past 28 years. Then I read the debut work from Heather B. Armstrong; It Sucked and Then I Cried. How I had a baby, a breakdown and a much needed margarita. Photographing Eden, Jason Gray

The poems of Jason Gray’s first full-length collection unleash creatures, characters, and landmarks from myth and history. Photographing Eden presents portraits of pyramids, Greek statues, painters, polar bears, spacecrafts, and a thoroughly modern Adam and Eve. Certainly, the stillness of these sharply-fixed, descriptive poems reminds the reader of photographs, but more importantly, Photographing Eden is fixated on the act of photography. In “Your Art History,” Gray writes of a photographer, “you wonder/ If this is a fiction you’re creating./ Look at the image reborn/ In the chemical bath, the darkness drawn/ Out of the white, and fixed/ Forever.” Gray’s poems investigate the act of creation, the crafting of art and image, and the relationship between the artist, artwork, and viewer.
